Content systems at scale

Led design-system priorities and pattern review, with hands-on contributions during my designer's leave. The reusable-pattern program produced 15 patterns adopted 154 times, saving 1,000+ engineering hours.

At a glance

The work in context.

The problem

Help teams reuse effective language and interaction patterns instead of solving the same interface problems separately.

My contribution

Managed the designer building the system, helped set roadmap priorities, reviewed and approved patterns, and contributed patterns during her maternity leave.

The takeaway

A reusable pattern combines components, content, and guidance about when and how to use them.

I led content systems work as a Content Design Manager at Meta. I managed the designer creating the design system, participated in roadmap discussions about which patterns to prioritize, and reviewed and approved the work. During her maternity leave, I also helped create patterns directly.

The patterns combined components with content. That let us address how an interaction worked and the language people needed to understand it together.

Set priorities for reusable work

My role was primarily that of manager, leader, and approver. I participated in the meetings where we decided which patterns belonged on the roadmap, helping shape the system’s direction alongside the designer building it.

This work connected leadership with craft: deciding what to invest in, reviewing the resulting patterns, and contributing directly when the team needed coverage.

Connect content with components

A pattern was a collection of components as well as content. The guidance needed to help teams choose an appropriate interaction and make its meaning clear.

Examples included guidance against using ghost text and using typeahead instead of long dropdowns. These decisions connected content practice with interaction design rather than treating words as a final layer applied to a component.

Review, approve, and contribute

I reviewed and approved patterns as part of leading the work. When the designer went on maternity leave, I helped create patterns myself, combining my management responsibilities with hands-on contribution.

The system was a team effort. I set direction and supported the designer responsible for building it, while contributing directly during her leave.

Results across two programs

The reusable-pattern program and a separate string-editing program produced distinct results:

  • 15 reusable patterns, adopted 154 times, with 1,000+ engineering hours saved.
  • 2,000 string edits in the separate program, with 800+ engineering hours saved.

The reusable-pattern results show the value of investing in guidance teams can apply repeatedly. The string-editing results reflect a separate way content systems work reduced engineering effort.
