At a glance
The work in context.
The problem
Make inclusion and accessibility part of shared product work and ensure inclusive perspectives informed Meta's new company voice.
My contribution
Co-led the Enterprise DEI Network, created the first Enterprise Engineering accessibility fixathon, and owned the inclusion workstream for Meta's new voice and tone.
The takeaway
Give inclusion a practical path into product delivery and brand decisions.
I co-led the Enterprise DEI Network for years, helping promote and support inclusion projects across an organization of thousands of people and personally presenting to C-level leadership quarterly. Alongside that work, I created and led Enterprise Engineering’s first accessibility fixathon which I also helped run for years. Finally, I was invited to work at the Meta level to own the inclusion workstream for Meta’s company change in voice and tone.
“Thank you for all your hard work and contributions to the Enterprise DEI Network. Your ongoing work to ensure that EE’s products are as inclusive and accessible as possible is worth celebrating. Thank you for making a difference in DEI beyond your core responsibilities in Enterprise Engineering.”
— Atish Banjeera, CIO
Make accessibility a shared responsibility
As co-lead of the Network’s Integrate workstream, I created the first Enterprise Engineering accessibility fixathon. Before an accessibility expert was hired, I led the effort to bring hundreds of engineers, product designers, and content designers together to improve the accessibility of our internal products.
I led annual accessibility fixathons over five years, educating hundreds of people on the importance of accessible products, leading trainings in how to use screen readers, and showcasing common bugs and fixes. The work included creating the systems that made participation actionable: backend task triage and tracking, a task scoring system and dashboard built with Engineering, and internal communications and promotion.
Bring Design into the fixathon
Accessibility work needed participation from Design as well as Engineering. In 2023, I negotiated to include Design and supported the Engineering volunteer team in modifying the fixathon tool to accommodate Design tasks.
Design tasks made up about 40% of the total that year. Including them expanded the work represented in the fixathon and gave product and content designers a way to contribute alongside engineers.
In 2023, 212 people signed up to tackle 1,017 tasks across 17 Enterprise Product teams. Those figures describe participation and the tasks in scope.
Bring inclusive perspectives into Meta’s voice
I owned the inclusion workstream for Meta’s company-wide exploration of a new brand voice and tone. I created the plan to gather feedback from inclusive groups over several cycles, bringing those perspectives into the development of the tone framework.
I gained the trust of the Brand team through that work. All recommendations were included in the updated tone framework, connecting the feedback process to the resulting company guidance.
Results
- 212 fixathon sign-ups in 2023, with participants taking on a scope of 1,017 tasks across 17 teams.
- Design tasks represented about 40% of the 2023 total, following the expansion of the fixathon tool to include Design work.
- Annual accessibility fixathons over five years, supported by task triage, tracking, scoring, dashboards, and communications.
- All inclusion recommendations incorporated into Meta’s updated tone framework.
- Quarterly presentations to C-level leadership, bringing visibility to inclusion work across Enterprise.
How I approached the work
These projects connected inclusion to concrete ways of working: organizing tasks, enabling participation across disciplines, gathering feedback over multiple cycles, and bringing recommendations into shared guidance. My contribution combined content strategy with the coordination and systems needed to move the work forward.
“Your compassion and respect for others shine through strongly. You create an environment where people feel heard, supported, and valued, which strengthens trust and collaboration across teams.”
